#WeekendWisdom 082 Internet Down

Welcome to #WeekendWisdom number 82. This week we’re going to talk about Internet Down.

Where is this coming from?

Where were you on Tuesday morning the 8th of June 2021 at around 11:00am Irish time? Did you experience any problems doing work online, or with email or things like that?

I was blissfully unaware of anything happening. I was in the middle of giving training over on Google Meet and when I finished the session, I came off and I went online and I found out that during that session half the internet appeared to go down for everybody.

Sites like Amazon, PayPal, eBay, The Independent, Irish Times, BBC, CNN, all of these sites, all over the world were becoming unresponsive and throwing up error messages.

What caused the internet down situation?

What had happened was a company called Fastly, which provides content delivery network services to vast quantities of online clients all over the world, had a failure in their setup. It caused 85% of their customers to experience troubles.

For a period of about an hour or so it appeared the entire internet had gone down.

Now I was blissfully unaware. I was in the middle of a Meet session, which was unaffected. So I was lucky.

What should you take from this situation?

This just reminds me of #WeekendWisdom number 69 where I talked about the dependence on the cloud. Here we have the internet appearing to go down. So is your business setup to be able to handle such a situation like this, where the internet may go down? Can you do things manually offline?

Just think about those type of things and bear in mind these things happen at worst possible time.

So that’s it for this week. Lets be careful out there and we’ll talk to you again next week.
